The Grape Route - Bendigo Wineries Tour
At the 1873 Vienna Exhibition, judges famously exclaimed "no Colonial wine can be that good" when tasting Bendigo 's Hermitage. Vines were first planted in the Bendigo district in the early 1850's and early wines went on to receive acclaim. Phylloxera tragically devastated vines across this region in 1893 and a bountiful resurgence of the local wine industry began in the 1960's and continues today. Bendigo is once again considered a region of winemaking excellence as recently confirmed by leading Australian wine critic James Halliday. In his 2008 edition of 'Australian Wine Companion', he awarded twenty-two Bendigo wines 90 points or more and five Bendigo wineries received a prestigious 5-star rating! The Bendigo region has gained a reputation over recent years for the high quality and depth of flavour of the big-bodied red wines, particularly Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Increasingly, however, the region is producing fine white wines from varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. There is also a recent trend toward the production of some of the older Italian varieties, most notably Sangiovese. So sit back, enjoy the scenery and let us drive you to the cellar door! This tour will take you on a journey to wineries, where you can experience locally-grown wines and meet the winemakers in a relaxed atmosphere.
